The short answer
| Situation | Tacos per adult |
|---|---|
| Tacos plus other food (sides, a buffet, cake and snacks) | 3 to 4 |
| Tacos are the whole meal | 4 to 5 |
| Long party (4+ hours) or a big-eating crowd | 5 to 6 |
| Kids under 12 | About 2 |
These are rules of thumb, not a quote. Most taqueros price per guest with a set number of hours of service, so ask how many tacos their package assumes.
Count guests the way a taquero does
- Count RSVPs, then add 10%. Backyard parties grow. Running out of tortillas at 9pm is worse than leftovers.
- Kids usually count as guests. Many packages charge per head over a certain age; ask where the cut-off is.
- Staff, band and DJ eat too. Add them to the count.
- Know the minimum. Most taquerias and carts have a guest or spending minimum. If you're under it, you pay the minimum anyway, so you may as well plan for seconds.
Hours of service matter more than you think
Most taquiza packages run 2 to 3 hours of cooking. Guests eat in waves: a first round when the grill starts and a second when the party peaks. If your party runs long, ask about an extra hour instead of a bigger order; it's often cheaper than more meat that sits.
Sides change the math
Rice, beans, salad, quesadillas or a nacho bar fill people up and bring tacos per person down by about one. Aguas frescas and chips do not. If you're also serving a full plate of food, 2 to 3 tacos is enough.
